The Porch Swing
The swing, the source of hours of entertainment and laughter from young children
to the young at heart.
Pioneers made swings from wooden sticks and rope tied to a tree to let their
children frolic during the down times as they traveled.
As the swing evolved through the years it soon became the center of the
playground.
Some of my favorite memories are playing on a swing. The tire swing in the tree
at my cousin's house, the swing set in my backyard. Daringly jumping from the
swing as I bravely swung as high as I could. Teaching my kids to “pump” at the
local park swing and now my grandchildren.
One often forgotten swing is the porch swing, shaped like a bench and
hung from the front porch ceiling. The porch swing is where the mothers would sit
watching the children play while visiting with the neighbor ladies and sipping lemonade.
In the evenings it's where the families would gather after the day's activities.
Through the years people began to hang the porch swing from anything that
could support them, not only porches but trees, arbors, pergolas,
stands in the garden.
Our porch swing idea was born when we realized the light wooden swing
we had was no match for this humid Florida weather.
I can now sit on my porch swing with my grandchildren and listen to the stories
about their days laughing and making memories to cherish.
